When Wisdom Teeth Cause Trouble: 3 Reasons for an Extraction

Your wisdom teeth are the last dental structures to come in. They typically start to erupt anywhere in your late teens to your early twenties, but people often choose to have them removed. While they may not cause problems for some, many have issues because of their third molars. You might be wondering why they would be extracted, so here are three reasons that call for it to protect smiles in the long run.

1.)  Wisdom Teeth Are Impacted

There is a chance your wisdom teeth are impacted. This means they don’t fully erupt past your gums or only do so partially. This can happen if there isn’t enough room, but it often leads to discomfort. You may also have swelling or struggle brushing them, but this can lead to a myriad of problems that affect your oral health. Having your third molars removed can help you avoid issues later on.

2.)  May Cause Bite Problems or Overcrowding

One thing that may be caused by impacted wisdom teeth is that they can come in at the wrong angle or push against their neighbors. This can lead to misalignment over time, meaning you’ll need orthodontics to correct bite issues. Not only that, but overcrowding can also be caused. This can make new nooks and crannies that can increase your risk of oral health issues like gum disease and decay.

However, extracting your third molars will prevent pressure from being put on your smile and shifting it. That way, you keep your alignment how it is.

3.)  Higher Risk of Infection or Decay

As was mentioned above, your wisdom teeth may be hard to clean or create areas that are tough to scrub, like pockets from partial eruption. You may not be able to effectively brush, but combined with the discomfort they bring, you might just leave them alone altogether! You may increase your chances of developing cavities or infection as bacteria and debris build up over time.

Thankfully, everything above can be avoided by removing wisdom teeth that may cause trouble. While some people might not need to have them extracted, it’s important to talk to your dentist about it. They can better understand whether there’ll be an issue later on; that way, you can be confident getting this treatment to preserve your oral health in the long run.
