A Guide to Proper Mouthguard Care

A mouthguard is a great way to protect your smile while you work out or play sports. It effectively redistributes the force of facial blows across it, so you prevent chips, cracks, or even knocked-out teeth. That said, to get the most use out of this oral appliance, you should take care of it. Here is a guide to set you up for success.

Properly Clean Your Mouthguard

As you use your mouthguard, plaque can transfer to it. This happens when there’s bacteria on your teeth when you put it in. So, you should regularly clean it by brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, clear soap. Let it air-dry and place it into its protective case. That way, you prevent it from smelling bad and prevent oral health issues.

Put Your Mouthguard in Its Case

You’ll likely only use your mouthguard when exercising or playing sports, so when you aren’t using it, place it into its designated case. The one your dentist gave you is ventilated, so bacteria and dust can’t get on it while also letting air in to dry it off. Don’t forget to clean this container as well with regular dishwashing soap every few days.

Avoid These Bad Habits

While mouthguards are effective against facial blows, they aren’t that great in the heat. When they sit in direct sunlight or in a hot car, they can lose shape. When this happens, wearing this appliance may be uncomfortable or even ineffective. Not only that, but don’t chew on them either. This will increase the wear they experience and lessen their lifespan.

Replace Your Mouthguard Consistently

With proper care, your mouthguard can last for five years. This timeline may be shorter if you actively use it, but many people opt to get a new one every year. Yours can last this long because it’s made from durable, high-quality materials. However, this doesn’t mean you should never replace it. If you notice any tears, cracks, or a poor fit, then it may be time to swap it out. That way, your teeth stay safe and sound.
